Well I know its been out for a little while but i took advantage of the Easter Holidays to take my eldest to see this movie after much nagging by her I gave in.
I had seen a few trailers both online and on the TV and i was expecting the movie to be a completely different storyline to the original. With Tim Burton as the Director, who I love, i was afraid that it wouldn’t suit his style of directing. I didn’t want the original to be solely ignored and i didn’t want Tim Burton to change his style either, hence why i was so apprehensive in going to see it.
The original animated film… i like it, i am not a huge fan but it does remind me of when i used to watch it as a child and there are a few things in the original that I wouldn’t like to see changed in any way or too much, if that makes any sense, just because it has a nostalgic feeling to it for me now.
I was quite surprised that the storyline was more like the original than i thought it would be, but there were still some major differences of which may have needed to be changed due to it being a live action movie. There were a few differences that did ruin the original for me and made it a little darker in my opinion and my eldest wasn’t too sure in a few scenes as they were a little uneasy shall we say for children.
Dumbo himself i thought was really cute and i can see why the film is a hit for some Disney fans. I felt Dumbo had a bit more emotion in him than maybe the children actors in the film. I was disappointed that the common outfit that Dumbo wears in the animated movie wasn’t included in the live action as it is iconic with the animated film.
I will give Danny Devito high praise as i loved his character and he brought such a nice light humor to the film. He is a long time fave of mine and it was a joy to watch him in this role considering in the original animation you didn’t see the humans faces it was very much the point of view of the animals.
There were a few nods to the original that made me smile and took me aback, but all in all, its not the type of movie i would be dying to go see again and one that if I had missed it in the cinema i wouldn’t be disappointed.
So to summarize, its was an ok movie with some highlights, but i think because i have the original animated version as part of my childhood etc, the live action was like watching a different film with little nods to the original animated feature. So would I want the live action to be exactly the same then? Not sure … and this is the question I found asking myself after watching the film with no clear answer. It’s a film that i would probably, if i could rewind time, wait until it comes out on dvd or rent and then watch it that way.
Let me know if you have seen the film and your thoughts..Thanks for reading.
